The Inflation Reduction Act, aka Build Back somewhat Better, aka the first big climate bill to EVER survive the Senate and live to tell the tale, is heading toward a vote in the House on Friday.

There were a handful of climate peacocks of the blue-dog variety who had talked at one point about holding the bill hostage. The good news: Looks like they’re just going to shut up and vote for it (and save their hostage-taking for another day)

Looking to help? Use this link to get on the phone or send a quick note to your rep telling them to VOTE FOR THE BILL!

Today's Action: The House will be voting on the biggest US climate bill EVER as soon as this week. We’re halfway there. Call your Democratic Representative and tell them to turn this bill into law (Follow the link to see how)@CitizensClimate… https://t.co/57Fe319oE6

Meanwhile, lots of folks are putting the word out (even some in the mainstream media!) about the amazing ways that the Inflation Reduction Act is going to make our country better (as well as the planet)

...the legislation would provide $3   billion for the Postal Service to buy zero-emission delivery vehicles and install necessary charging infrastructure at post offices and central mail facilities. (That’s triple the amount of  direct funding in the bill for heavy-duty vehicles  like garbage trucks and school buses.)

The Postal Service has  previously stated  that, should Congress provide more support, the agency could increase the number of electric vehicles it plans to introduce.

“ This bill is trying to put to bed their argument that they need more resources,” said Adrian Martinez, a senior attorney for Earthjustice. The environmental group is one of several organizations that are  suing to scrap  the Postal Service’s original mail-truck plan.

Another benefit of the #InflationReductionAct: More trees in urban areas to lower temps and reduce pollution. Community and urban forestry is central to the response to #ClimateChange. “It’s literally lifesaving at this point in time,” said @JadDaley.https://t.co/VQfq71J1s0

Some climate benefits of the IRA: ✅Households could receive $28,500 in up-front incentives to buy electric vehicles and household appliances ✅Families could save up to $1,800 in annual costs for gasoline and utility bills ✅1.5 million new good jobs would be created

I ran for President with a promise to combat the existential threat of climate change. Yesterday, the Senate took a historic step by passing my proposal to build a clean energy future. It will create jobs for American workers and secure the future of our kids and grandkids. pic.twitter.com/1IHINQRldq

… But some are pointing out problems, too:

#InflationReductionAct - The clean energy transition will create a lot of jobs — for men "The investment in climate action from the Inflation Reduction Act will help create millions of jobs. But experts say changes are needed for women to reap those… https://t.co/qjMn5AwR0N

And some might be less of a problem than you might think:

... offshore auctions just aren’t what they used to be. Take for instance the offshore lease auction that the Biden administration held last November, the largest such sale in history. The government offered companies around 80 million acres of offshore territory for bidding, but it only received bids for about 1.7 million acres. Much of that leased acreage may never actually produce oil: About a third of the auction’s 300 bids came from ExxonMobil, which snapped up wide swaths of shallow territory close to the Louisiana coastline. Most analysts agree there’s very little oil left in those tracts, which suggests that Exxon may want to use the seabed to sequester the carbon it captures from other operations.

...Even if all the auctions move forward, however, the emissions benefits of the bill’s clean tax credits will likely dwarf the impact of new oil production. An analysis from the Rhodium Group, a data analytics firm, estimates the Inflation Reduction Act will prevent 24 tons of carbon emissions for every new ton of carbon emissions it creates. That’s in part because the energy credits are so generous, but it’s also because the leases aren’t as enticing to big oil producers as they would have been a few decades ago.

This is VERY not good.

This is absolutely insane video in South Korea. Extreme flooding that hasn’t been seen in 80 years or more. Very extreme flooding, causing massive problems in Seoul and the entirety of the country. #SouthKorea #flooding #weather pic.twitter.com/88xOxVuN4B

This is incredible! We’re getting a first-person view of several hoist rescues performed by members of the @kentuckyguard in the aftermath of the Eastern Kentucky floods. Massive flooding in Death Valley

Death Valley, the hottest and driest place in the US just saw the 4th 1-in-1,000 year rain event in less than 2 weeks in the US. 3/4 of Death Valley’s annual rainfall fell in 3 hours. pic.twitter.com/0DK6HNNZTq

Write you Rep and tell them to PASS THE BILL!

Earlier in the day everyone was busy trying to figure out what was going on at the Novofedorovka  airfield in Crimea. The Russians said it was just a minor problem with a cigarette setting off a few stored munitions, but photos showed massive explosions plus at least 9 destroyed aircraft. But if it was a Ukrainian attack, how did the pull it off? Was it ballistic missiles? Aircraft-launched missiles? Drone-launched missiles? Saboteurs?

Then tonight, at the Ziabrivka airfield in Belarus a few dozen miles north of Kyiv, more explosions were heard. Or were they? There were reports that the Belarussians were indulging in some live-fire drills.

The Russians have been using it as a base to run bombing raids against Ukrainian cities (mostly hitting civilian infrastructure).

Analysts had published satellite images of the Belarusian airfield Zyabrovka near Gomel, and Moscow has reportedly maintained an S-400 battalion with probable Pantsirs & Iskanders there, which may be the reason it has now been reportedly hit. pic.twitter.com/pX4Sh2h6cI

So it would seem to be a legitimate target, right?

"At the Zyabrovka airfield in the Gomel region, air defense and air force exercises, previously repeatedly announced by the Pyurer (Lukashenko), are being held. Any pops, etc. - exclusively within the frame of these exercises." (Advisor of the Minisrty of Defence of Ukraine) pic.twitter.com/kcxJYViFVK

But if they were in the middle of raiding the airfield, wouldn’t the Ukraine Ministry of Defense be pushing fog-of-war stories, too? I guess we’ll have to wait until the cold light of dawn to find out.

And speaking of fog of war...

Apparently there was some sort of hoo-ha at the home of TFG (which isn’t actually his home, since it’s a for-profit hotel and resort, and he had signed a covenant saying he would never actually live there, but we all know how binding signed agreements are on TFG).

3. IT IS NOT a residence. It is a business he is employed with which allows him to live there. https://t.co/SJJXyhgkf3

It’s been pretty thoroughly covered elsewhere on this site, but I thought this was fun:

Various folks have tried to explain the GOP mindset, in light of “Lock her up!” and “It was a beautiful phone call”

A criminal is a kind of person that you are, not a descriptor of the things that you do. Thus, there are criminals who they are disgusted to see get off on the technicalities such as civil rights, and good people who happen to break the law subject to very unfair arrests.

While we're the fuck at it, why did the Trump kids get to steal from their fake fundraisers and all they get is 𝘥𝘰𝘯'𝘵 𝘥𝘰 𝘪𝘵 𝘢𝘨𝘢𝘪𝘯, 𝘺𝘰𝘶 𝘭𝘪𝘵𝘵𝘭𝘦 𝘴𝘤𝘢𝘮𝘱𝘴? Maybe us regular folks are really tired of seeing these rich white folks get away with bullshit

“This is going to enrage Trump’s base” Bro, the words ‘Happy Holidays’ enrage Trump’s base

I'm no Sauron fan, but here's why forming a fellowship to raid Mount Doom and destroy the One Ring is going to enrage his base

How much of a big markup? Consumer Watchdog reports that CA refiners are gauging to the tune of $1 PER GALLON. So yeah, that’s a lot.

A review of California’s five big oil refiners’ investor reports from the second quarter shows unprecedented, windfall profits that top $1 per gallon.     Consumer Watchdog reported that the state’s five big oil refiners, that make 97% of the gasoline in the state, made from three to ten times more in profits per gallon off of West Coast operations from April through June than they did in the same period last year.       Profits per gallon from West Coast operations also registered highest among each refiner’s reported regions across the United States and world – proving that it is profits, not California’s environmental rules and taxes, that drive up California pump prices.  As of 8/8, the Energy Information Administration reports Californians pay $1.26 per gallon more than the national average for gasoline.

"Californians have been an ATM for oil refiners for too long and now it's time for the legislature to push back on these outrageous profits," said Jamie Court, president of Consumer Watchdog.

California has a plan to replace all its old diesel-burning buses, which release nasty asthma-causing particulate matter almost directly into children’s lungs.

Replace them… but by 2045! This legislator thinks we can do better:

Thx to @CALPIRG, @AEEnet, @EnvCalifornia, @LionElectricCo & @TwinRiversUSD for highlighting the need for my bill #AB2731, which speeds up CA’s transition to electric school buses. Biaggi has been a progressive powerhouse and climate hawk in the New York State Senate (who got into office by taking down a conservaDem who LITERALLY caucused with the GOP). Now she’s set her sights on Rep Sean Maloney, another conservaDem (who caucuses with the Chamber of Commerce).

Sean Patrick Maloney's reliance on dark money Super PACs to run against me is no surprise. Maloney has spent the past decade raising millions from corporate PACs, and then delivering for his special interest donors. Now they want to return the favor.https://t.co/bitERm5a8A
