A 14-year-old Wenatchee girl is dead after being swept away on the fast-moving Entiat River Sunday afternoon near the Lake Creek Campground.

Chelan County Sheriff’s Office Sergeant Jason Reinfeld said that over 40 rescuers responded to the area about 28 miles up Entiat River Road around 4:15 pm for a report of a girl that had been washed away. A 20-year-old man was also stranded in the middle of the river, clinging to a rock.

It took roughly 30 to 45 minutes for the first rescuers to get to the area because of its remote location.

“Rescuers determined to set up a system using ladders and ropes to access the girl in the water,” Reinfeld said. “Simultaneously, a call was made to Whidbey Island Naval Air Station for a hoist capable helicopter to access the male that was on the rock.”

Eventually the girl’s body was recovered around the same time the stranded man was hoisted out of the river, roughly 8:00 pm.

The names of the people involved are not being released at this time to protect the privacy of the family.

Reinfeld added local rivers are certainly more hazardous in the springtime, especially in areas like the Entiat River where there is not only extra water runoff but the river itself is more narrow, making for swifter conditions.

First responders and rescuers responded from across the region from the Chelan County Sheriff’s Office, Chelan County Fire Districts 1, 7 and 8, Douglas County Fire District 4, Chelan County Volunteer Search and Rescue, Chelan County Mountain Rescue and Ballard Ambulance.
